MRI
An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) exam is a diagnostic test that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. During the exam, you will lie on a table that slides into a tube-shaped machine. You will need to hold still during the exam, which lasts approximately 30-45 minutes.
The MRI machine produces a strong magnetic field that temporarily realigns the water molecules in your body. Radio waves are then sent through your body, which cause these realigned molecules to produce signals that are detected by the machine. These signals are used to create detailed, high-resolution images of the area being examined.
MRI exams are used to diagnose a wide range of medical conditions, including brain and spinal cord injuries, joint problems, and cancer. The exam is non-invasive and painless, but it can be noisy and can cause feelings of claustrophobia for some people. Your doctor will use the images created during the exam to help diagnose any issues and determine the best course of treatment for you.
