Mammogram

A mammogram uses X-ray radiation to create images of the breast tissue. During the exam, you will stand in front of a special machine that will gently compress your breast between two plates. The plates flatten the breast tissue, which allows for a clear and detailed X-ray image to be taken.

Mammography is a screening tool that is used to detect breast cancer early, before any symptoms are present. Early detection of breast cancer can lead to more successful treatment and better chance of survival. It is recommended that women aged 40 and older have a mammogram annually.

When a screening exam is inconclusive or identifies a suspicious mass in the breast, or a patient has symptoms such as a lump or pain in the breast, a diagnostic mammogram may be recommended. A diagnostic mammogram is similar to a screening exam but involves more targeted views of the breast.

The results of a diagnostic mammogram can help your doctor determine whether further tests or procedures, such as a biopsy, are needed. It is important to follow up with your doctor if you experience any changes in your breast tissue, even if you have had a recent mammogram.
