Bone Densitometry (DEXA)

A bone density scan, also called a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan, is a medical test that measures the strength and density of your bones. During the exam, you will lie on a table while a special machine uses a small amount of X-ray radiation to scan the bones in your body, usually in your hip and spine.

The machine measures the amount of X-ray radiation that is absorbed by your bones, which is used to calculate the strength and density of your bones. This information is then used to determine if you have osteoporosis or if you are at risk for developing it.

Bone density scans are important for people at risk for osteoporosis, including women over age 65 and men over age 70, as well as those who have risk factors such as a family history of osteoporosis, a small frame, or a history of fractures. The exam is painless and non-invasive, and there is only a small amount of radiation exposure involved. Your doctor will use the results of your bone density scan to help diagnose any issues and determine the best course of treatment for you.
